It's interesting that the new guy is coming out of the robot in this picture and in the next one you posted, the new guy has taken his place as the central character ;)

what a cool way to see it. in my mind, i thought of them as seperate because of the color and eye design. maybe they are connected, maybe he's evolving? interesting viewpoint, thanks.

First, I’d like to preface my interpretation with some background information. It seems as though you’ve titled both pieces LOTUS. One definition of Lotus is “a fruit eaten by the lotus-eaters and considered to cause indolence and dreamy contentment.” The lotus-eaters are “any of a people in Homer's Odyssey subsisting on the lotus and living in the dreamy indolence it induces.” Finally, indolence is defined as “averse to activity, effort, or movement: habitually lazy.”

Without further ado, my interpretation:

It’s a before and after picture.

In the purple piece, the guy’s eyes are big, symbolizing that they’re wide open. He sees reality and doesn’t like it. He is king (the crown above his head) in his domain/job, a powerful guy. But power comes at a price. He is unhappy. His life isn’t balanced. His unhappiness makes him weak and he turns to the lotus (an anti-depressant or illicit drug) which is promised to make him feel better. The color purple symbolizes a man who is sad/despondent (blue) but who also has some of life’s energy left (red). He still has the ability to choose.

In the blue piece (the after), the skeletal looking guy uses the robot to live his life for him because he’s become too indolent to live it himself. Many would be apt to view this blue piece on the positive side and think that the man is exiting the robot and becoming real. However, I view it as the man entering the robot. His eyes have become small, symbolizing his lack of vision/awareness of reality, brought on by the lotus. The choice that he has made to avoid reality by consuming the promised fruit has made him incapable of seeing, feeling, acting… The robot (the government, society, a stronger willed person) will now run his life, and he will complacently go along. The color blue symbolizes a man who is cold/dead and no longer able or willing to choose for himself.

Wow...

Makes you wonder now why blue was chosen as the color for baby boys.

When I said "The color blue symbolizes a man who is cold/dead and no longer able or willing to choose for himself" I meant IN THIS ART PIECE, not as a generalization on mankind. ;-P

That's a great interpretation, T. Lots of interesting connections between the two pieces. I like the idea that the robot symbolizes government and society. Very cool, thanks. ;)
