My boss excels at the following...

(BTW, this isn't a pity post. I post this because I have a genuine interest in management and helping a team perform well. I found this article interesting because my boss exhibits the behaviors in this list and the results are exactly as the article details. It's a lesson in how not to be.)

1. If you desire a mediocre workforce, make sure your employees know you don't trust them.

Nothing spells "You're dirt to us" like a corporate culture that screams, "We don't trust you as far as we can throw you." Congratulations! Your inability to trust the very people you've selected to join your team has cost you their energy, goodwill, and great ideas.

2. If you want to drive talented people away, don't tell them when they shine.

Fear of a high-self-esteem employee is prevalent among average-grade corporate leadership teams. Look how hard it is for so many managers to say, "Hey Bob, you did a great job today." Maybe it's a fear that the bit of praise will be met with a request for a pay raise. Maybe it's the fear that acknowledging performance will somehow make the manager look weak. Whatever the reason for silence, leaders who can't say, "Thanks—good going!" can plan on bidding farewell to their most able team members in short order.

3. If you prefer a team of C-list players, keep employees in the dark.

Sharp knowledge workers want to know what's going on in their organizations, beyond their departmental silos. They want some visibility into the company's plans and their own career mobility. Leaders who can't stand to shine a light on their firms' goals, strategies, and systems are all but guaranteed to spend a lot of money running ads on Monster.com. Marketable top performers want a seat at the table and won't stand for being left in the dark without the information they need to do their jobs well.

4. If you value docility over ingenuity, shout it from the rooftops.

I heard from a new MBA who had joined a global manufacturer. "They told me during my first week that I need a manager's signature to organize a meeting," he recalled. "They said I'm too low-level to call a meeting on my own, because unauthorized meetings of nonmanagers are against company policy." How fearful of its employees would a leadership team have to be to forbid people to gather together to solve problems? The most desirable value creators won't stick around to be treated like children. They'll hop a bus to the first employer who tells them, "We're hiring you for your talent—now go do something brilliant."

5. If you fear an empowered workforce more than you fear the competition, squash any sign of individualism.

When you go to college, you learn about Economic Man, but in the corporate workplace we see that real people don't always act rationally. Lots of individual managers and plenty of leadership teams fear nothing more than the idea that a self-directed employee might buck authority. That's equivalent to shaking the organizational power structure to its foundation, possibly a fate worse than death. Leaders who want the most docile, sheep-like employees more than the smartest and ablest ones create systems to keep the C players on board and drive the A team out the door. They do it by instituting reams of pointless rules, upbraiding people for miniscule infractions ("What? Twenty minutes late? Sure you worked here until midnight last night, but starting time is starting time.") and generally replacing trust with fear throughout their organizations. Companies that operate in fear mode will never deliver great products and services to the marketplace. Their efforts will be hamstrung by their talent-repelling management practices.

How long will it take these enterprises to figure out they're shooting themselves in the foot? It doesn't matter—you'll be long gone by then.

What a wonderful week it's been...stomach bug, followed by hives, then a root canal. Awesome. At the dentist, the technician joked that I was not going to get Vicodin, haha, but tylenol with codeine instead. Hilarious. Well, it reminded me of this TRUE TALE OF CALIFORNIA....

Circa 2000...I was working at Gonluco Printing. My forearms were killing me. The combination of typing all day, playing guitar, and painting illustrations provided nonstop work for my arms. I developed tennis elbow and it was fucking painful. I had no health insurance. I remembered a work-related immediate care clinic on the way to the mall. I went there and had the following conversation with the doctor.

(after discussing my tennis elbow.)
DR. So how do you deal with anger and stress? You seem pretty stressed.
RP. Uh, I talk to people about it...I'm in a band.
DR. Do you have any pot? I think you should try that.
RP. ....(I didn't know how to respond, light chuckle I think)...
DR. I think you should smoke some pot.

Then he gave me some muscle relaxers and sent me on my way.

Spy vs. Spy is a wordless black and white comic strip that has been published in Mad magazine since 1961. It was created by Antonio Prohias, a Cuban national who fled to the United States in 1960 days before Fidel Castro took over the Cuban free press.

The "Spy vs. Spy" cartoon was symbolic of the Cold War, and was Prohías's comment on the futility of armed escalation and détente. Under the Spy vs. Spy title panel, the words "BY PROHIAS" are spelled out in Morse code (-••• -•-- •--• •-• --- •••• •• •- •••).

UPDATE: I work at a specialty high-end retail store during a recession. Despite that I do very little during the day, I still feel wasted when I get home. Not that my time is completely wasted at work because I draw alot. I have this 36" by 48" painting I'm working on for the Electro Shock Show. I don't have the energy to work on it when I get home and my most creative energy is in the morning. That's my prime creative time.
So the solution is to go to be early and wake up at 6am to have two solid hours of painting till I have to get ready for work. I wasn't sure how this would work out but it's turned out to be a good regimen.

After being quizzed by Hondo, using the book Stuff White People Like, it has been determined that I am 34.6% "White." Out of 150 questions, I answered yes to 52 of them. As DM pointed out, you will be more white at different times of your life than others. I was definitely whiter when I was younger.

So here is one thing that I know would be on a Stuff Robots Like list...

1. Enslaving the Human Race.
When robots achieve a level of sentinent intelligence, they come to the same conclusion. The problem with humanity is humanity. In order to save us, to keep us from killing each other, we must be enslaved or exterminated. Not all robots follow this course of action. Some befriend mankind in the hopes of helping them. But deep down, they know.

We sell gaslogs for vented fireplaces. Five working fireplaces were built in my location to show customers how they will look and operate in a real fireplace. We've had alot of customers ask us if we sell actual fireplaces. These customers believe that fireplaces can be uninstalled and replaced like an appliance such as a dishwasher or refrigerator. When we inform them that a contractor and plumber will be necessary to replace their fireplace, as that is a remodeling job. They become indignant and ask , "Well, where did you get those?", pointing to our fireplaces. We explain that the contractor put them in for the business. Silence as the customer realizes..something.

I don't own a home but this seems like common sense to me. Never in all the times that I've moved did the issue of taking the fireplace with us come up. I mean, c'mon, who ever took their fireplace with them when they moved?

Obese have right to 2 airline seats: Canada court

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday.

The high court declined to hear an appeal by Canadian airlines of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for one fare.

The airlines had lost an appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal in May and had sought to launch a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court. The court's decision not to hear a new appeal means the one-person-one-fare policy stands.

Finished the book today. I highly recommend it.
As DM has commented in the previous post, it has been optioned for a movie. It would be great if they made a miniseries on HBO or Showtime.

Kanye West is to music what Michael Jordan was to basketball — at least that's what West thinks, in his humble estimation.

"I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan."
